2009 Glastonbury Festival...190K people, outside, in the rain.

Over the weekend, appoximately 190,000 people made their way to Worthy Farm in western England to attend the 2009 Glastonbury Festival. Attendees came to see performances at what is billed as "Europe's largest open-air music festival" on many stages over four days - headliners included Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, and a reunited Blur. Rainy weather did little to dampen the mood, as attendees enjoyed themselves in tent cities, concert performances, dance tents, and the surrounding countryside of Somerset, England. Collected here are a handful of images from this year's festival. http://budurl.com/7w94

Here is a shot of good Canadian boy Neil Young....love that hair! :-)

Check out this TED talk with Clay Shirky on how social media is rapidly changing our world.

While news from Iran streams to the world, Clay Shirky shows how Facebook, Twitter and TXTs help citizens in repressive regimes to report on real news, bypassing censors (however briefly). The end of top-down control of news is changing the nature of politics.

Maverick buzzin' the tower..... #fb

Did a little low pass at the Squamish spit one day on my way home from kiting. Would have been more fun in a P51 but I was still gettin' 170kts ground speed.

Can a kite power our planet? The guys at Makani Power think so...ok maybe more than one kite! Check out the TED.com talk #fb

I spent a week in Maui at the MaiTai Kite camp doing some kiteboarding and networking with a bunch of high-tech entrepreneurs, VCs and professional kiteboarders in May.  Part-time VC (:-) I just had to say that Bill) and MaiTai co-founder, BIll Tai, did a great job organizing guest speakers including Neil Pryde, the father of windsurfing. But the most fascinating talk was listening to the guys from Makani Power - Corwin Hardham(CTO) and Don Montague (co-founder and well known kite designer). These guys have a vision to harness high-altitude wind energy using kite like structures to help power our planet. They cite that in 2006 less than 2% of the world's energy consumption was supplied by renewable sources.

Along with solar, wind represents the only renewable source of energy that is substantially larger than the world's current energy needs. Moreover, of all of the renewable energy technologies (wind, solar, tidal, hydroelectric, biomass, geothermal), high-altitude wind has the largest energy per square foot. Capturing a small fraction of the global high-altitude wind energy flux could be sufficient to supply the current energy needs of the globe.

The Makani team have begun building early versions of the system and they have been testing it in Maui. The boys from Google (kitesurfers themselves) have funded Makani to date but I believe Makani are starting to look for further funding now. Check out this short video of Saul Griffith (co-founder and chief scientist) delivering the Makani pitch as a TED Talk.
